This post continues the series Slave Name Roll Project. Its purpose is to record the names of slaves found in records in an effort to help those trying to find their slave ancestors. The project seems to have been started by Schalene Dagutis on her blog Tangled Roots and Trees. My previous entry in this project was in October 2016.
I found the following slave deed in the Barrington Family Collection (#18.1.l) in the Kellenberger Room of the New Bern-Craven County Public Library.

Thomas Cutrell (or Cuthrell) was born about 1798, based on his age in the 1850 Craven County Census, and married Matilda Rowe around 25 September 1822 (Craven County Marriage Bond date).
William Barrington was born about 1795, again based on the 1850 Census, and married first Louisa Gaskins around 19 December 1822 (Craven County marriage bond date). A few months after the above transaction, William married Nancy V. Holton around 26 January 1843 (Craven County marriage bond date).
The 1850 Slave Census for Craven County lists Wm Barrington owning 12 slaves, including a 23 year old female and a 17 year old female. Either of these could possibly be Esther.
By the time William died (before 1859), though, Esther was not listed among the slaves on the inventory of William’s property. (See “North Carolina Estate Files, 1663-1979,” database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GY8X-51?cc=1911121&wc=Q6W5-GFJ%3A183209301%2C183209202%2C185401801 : 21 May 2014), Craven County > B > image 4 of 119; State Archives, Raleigh.) The slaves listed on the inventory are: Alfred, John, Charles, Ruben, Alic, Henry, Jacob, Eben, Jobe, Nathan, Betty, Milly, Harriet, Susan, Tamer, Mary, Julia, Comfort, and Margaret.
The Barrington Family Papers that the library owns are from this family of William Barrington.
