Mary James Clark Whitford was born in 1853. She died on 28 July 1872 at New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. Her death notice read: "Died, In this city on Sunday the 28th inst. Mary C. Whitford, daughter of Col. John D. Whitford.
Her funeral will take place this morning, at 9 o'clock, from the Baptist church. The citizens, generally, are invited to attend. Miss Whitford was a young and accomplished lady, having but a short time since returned from school, to be an ornament to society and be loved by all who knew her. Her death casts a sadness over this whole community, whose sympathies are with the father and her bereaved family, and which forcibly reminds us that in the midst of life we are in death."1
